Samsung

Founded in 1938, Samsung is the largest chaebol in South Korea, and the myriad of companies under its brand are some of the biggest in their respective industries, but Samsung Electronics is the most notable. It makes some of the most popular phones in use today, like the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. It also makes televisions, tablets, computers, headphones, and many of the displays, chips, and batteries found in devices from Apple, Sony, and others.

Who’s winning foldables?

Samsung, unsurprisingly, but:

Samsung, a trailblazer in the foldable phone market, commanded over 80 percent of the market share in 2022. However, with increasing competition from various brands in 2023–2024, Samsung’s share dropped from 60 percent and it now struggles to maintain 50 percent.

The tech analysts at TrendForce say foldable phones will only represent about 1.5 percent of the global smartphone market by the end of 2024, but grow to 5 percent by 2028 after Apple enters the race.

Samsung plugs Galaxy AI features into Galaxy Watches.

Samsung’s Fitbit-like new Energy Score and Wellness Tips insights are apparently powered by “Galaxy AI,” even if it’s unclear exactly how. The sleep algorithm also adds tracking for “movement during sleep, sleep latency, heart rate and respiratory rate during sleep.”

Next-gen Galaxy Watches will get these as part of One UI 6 Watch, which arrives later this year, but a beta program starts next month.

Is Samsung’s Snapdragon X ARM laptop imminent?

Yes, in a few days, says German tech site WinFuture, citing unnamed sources (and Samsung’s site). That includes a 16-inch Galaxy Book 4 Edge Pro that’s equipped with the highest-end version of the Snapdragon X ARM chip that’s meant to take on Apple’s custom M-series chips.

Expect other Snapdragon X laptops soon, including from Microsoft, Dell, and Asus.
