The Wall Street Journal has published a retrospective of how Apple’s caution in working on its devices has “hobbled its early efforts in the AI arena.” Part of the problem, according to the WSJ, was a group that adopted Google’s loose approach to deadlines.

A cautionary tale about donating to anons, starring Jack Dorsey.

Dorsey donated 14 Bitcoins to Nostr’s anonymous founder in 2022. That founder is Giovanni Torres Parra, according to Business Insider. Parra is a devotee of “far-right conspiracy theorist Olavo de Carvalho,” who “claimed that Pepsi-Cola was flavored with stem cells of aborted fetuses.”

Despite Google’s AI expertise, it drastically overestimates how good its tech is — as anyone can see in its search results. And that’s with expertise. This doesn’t bode well for everyone else’s use of AI!

Gemini Earn customers will finally get most of their funds back.

People who participated in Gemini’s lending program, which suspended withdrawals in the wake of the FTX collapse, will get “approximately 97 percent” of their money. Perhaps predictably, the Earn program also had some legal issues.

Ryan Salame, a top lieutenant at FTX, got over seven years in prison. He’s the second FTX official sentenced, after SBF himself, and did not cooperate with the government — unlike several other members of the inner circle.

Google will build new undersea cable to connect Australia and Africa.

There are relatively few undersea internet connections to Africa, says Bloomberg. The cable will start in Kenya, going south over land through several other countries before dropping undersea to connect to Australia.

Building and maintaining the undersea internet is more difficult than you’d think.

At one of the hospitals where many of the victims were taken, six were found to have skull and brain injuries, and 22 suffered injuries of the spine or spinal cord. Some patients have shown signs of paralysis, though it isn’t yet known if the damage is permanent.
